Yoga for Beginners: A Guide Book!

Breathe In! Breathe Out!

While juggling immense amounts of workloads in life, all we seek is a moment of peace. Also, these days when most of us have a sedentary lifestyle, we are prone to chronic physical and mental diseases. These are why most health experts and enthusiasts recommend engaging in some kinds of sports or activities that make our lives active. But many of us do not feel like hitting the gyms, running every day, or doing weight training. And that can be for multiple reasons like health issues, major body-injury in the past, etc.

But staying active is important, so what’s the alternative?

Well, originating in the Indian subcontinent during the Vedic Period (Rig Veda), Yoga has now become a global trend that has captured the attention of millions of health experts. Yoga is much more than a fitness regime. It helps you attune with your inner-self, aligning your energy and mind while ensuring that every organ in your body is revitalised.

As a beginner, Yoga is perfect for you since it is less stressful than any other fitness regime while helping you declutter your mind and aiding you in meditating. Also, the asanas help your body gain lost strength while making your body posture better than ever.

Yoga has various asanas ranging from easy to difficult levels. Now, you can choose the Asanas as per your flexibility and strength. As a tip for beginners, we can’t stress enough on the importance of doing Yoga regularly.

So, before you sit down and begin your yoga session, let’s discuss some do’s and dont’s that you need to know!

Tips for your first Yoga class

No matter what your age is, doing anything for the first time can be daunting, especially if you are charting unknown territories. As we embark upon a soul journey through Yoga, we need to understand ourselves first, including all our insecurities.

Indeed, most of us carry an unsaid burden of bags of insecurities about our image, abilities, and health. But the truth is we are capable of doing anything if we are willing to do it.

Now, excited enough to begin?

Let’s discuss all kinds of tips that you need to know for a good Yoga practice!

Clothes Affect your Overall Performance

This is fundamental yoga advice for beginners. You need the right attire for a fruitful yoga session. Now, before you go on the athleisure hunt, we need to understand some critical points about Yoga.

Yoga focuses on increasing your strength and flexibility. So, you need to ensure that your body is mobile and can do a range of motions without any hindrance. That’s why you need to go for soft, comfortable clothes, absorb sweat, and help your body move around. Do not choose clothes which flow or may cause hassles to move around. Nothing is as Important as Hydration

Now, Yoga is the epitome of simplicity which revolves around the idea that we have everything we need to live a healthy life. But without proper hydration, it will be difficult for you to continue an hour of yoga session.

So, as a first yoga class tip, we recommend that you atleast have 2-3 litres of water everyday.

Why?

While doing Asanas, your body’s metabolism increases. Now, without the right amount of water, the metabolism won’t reach an optimum level and this would cause loss of muscle and you will remain tired the whole day. So, carry a Sipper and keep drinking water, whenever you are thirsty throughout the session.

Note: Please, do not drink so much that you can’t do Asanas. Drink only to quench your thirst during the session. Or else, this would lead to nausea, heartburn, lethargy, etc.

Take a rest for 15 mins after the yoga session ends and you can drink as much as you want. Instead of drinking one bottle of water at once, drink a small amount of water every hour.

For a Mind-Body Connection, It Starts with Etiquettes.

Yoga helps you connect with your soul and energy. But it all starts with how you conduct yourself during the yoga session. It is important to disconnect yourself from the external world and stay focused on yourself while you do all poses and asanas. It’s all about experiencing the silence within yourself.

So, keep your phones switched off, and do not indulge in any conversation with anyone during the session. Focus on how your body moves and postures while ensuring that you are breathing seamlessly.

This also helps you ground yourself while recuperating from stress and revitalising your mental health.

Destress and Declutter

Yoga may seem easy, especially Hatha Yoga. But not all poses are easy for a beginner. As a beginner, you need to understand that Yoga is about distress and decluttering. There is a possibility that you may not be able to do all challenging postures on the very first day or initial days. Don’t get disheartened. Poses like Tarakavasana and Kakasana may seem easier initially, but these are some of the most challenging yoga poses. It’s all about being in control of your body and mind.

So, it takes time, patience, and practice to do all poses. Focus on decluttering your mind away from distress and distractions.

A Full Stomach is a Big No-No!

This is a crucial yoga tip for beginners. Never do Yoga post heavy meals. With a full stomach, you might get issues like sudden stomach pain, cramps, muscle pulls, gas, heartburn, nausea, etc. The list goes on and on. Yes, yoga boosts your metabolism, but that doesn’t mean that we should do any form of exercise post-meal.

You can have a small healthy snack like Banana, almonds, or whole grains pre-workout.

Align Yourself With The Clock!

Yoga primarily focuses on boosting your metabolism and works on your biological clock. So, the first thing that you need to teach yourself is discipline. Set your alarm clock and wake up early without fail. Try not to miss the time for yoga practice. If you have chosen to be a part of a yoga class, then always enter the class five minutes early.

Understand that Yoga is more than just a fitness session. It’s a lifestyle that invokes positivity in your body and mind.

Follow the Instructions!

Now, no matter what form of activity you choose for an active lifestyle, it’s important to maintain the correct posture and form, especially Yoga. Yoga may seem delicate and difficult, so without following proper instructions. You are prone to injury rather than any progress.

So, as a beginner, be mindful of what your yoga teacher instructs you. Follow every move, including breathing exercises, to gain optimum results.

If ever you feel that you cannot perform any yoga asanas, then do a child's pose. This asana helps your back stretch and relax, making your body ready to do asanas better.

Wrapping up!

Practice Yoga daily for better results like better control of your body, a positive mind with various physical ailments gone like Hypertension, Thyroid issues, etc. But without the right teacher, Yoga may seem difficult and worse; you can injure yourself. So, before you begin your journey, as a yoga tip for beginners, we suggest you consult with your doctor first to understand your medical history and fitness level. Do not jump into challenging poses in the initial stage. Begin with simple breathing exercises and Surya Namaskar. Slowly, try to add more poses as you upscale!

Hope you have an amazing active lifestyle journey with Yoga!
